is smtp not available for alerting in free version?

At the moment, you would have to build a web hook listener and re-direct messages to email. You may also explore zapier. Mostly people seem to prefer slack for alerting. Could you share more about your use case? How often do you expect alert emails - every hour / every event? SMTP is planned.
